HELP

When a warning appears during installation

When you run the LiveCapture4 installer, Windows security features may show a warning. Follow the steps below for the screen you see.

Information as of October 2026. Screen wording may change with Windows updates.

BEFORE YOU RUN

First, check before you run it (recommended)

Before you go past a warning, it is reassuring to confirm that your file is the official one.

  1. Did you get it from the official download page?

Please download only from the download page. Do not run files you received by email or from other sites.

  2. Compare the SHA-256 hash (optional)

Run the command below in PowerShell, and check that the Hash it shows matches the SHA-256 listed on the download page. If you saved the file somewhere other than the Downloads folder, adjust the path.

    Get-FileHash -Algorithm SHA256 "$HOME\Downloads\LiveCapture4_Setup_*.zip"

SMARTSCREEN

"Windows protected your PC" appeared

Microsoft Defender SmartScreen shows this warning for apps and installers that are not yet commonly downloaded. These three actions let you continue installing.

  1. Click "More info"

On the "Windows protected your PC" screen, click More info in the message.

  2. Check the file name and publisher

The file name and publisher are shown. Make sure the file name matches the one on the download page.

  3. Click "Run anyway"

The Run anyway button appears. Click it to start installing. To stop, click Don't run.

You do not need to turn SmartScreen offThe steps above are all you need to run the installer once. We recommend leaving SmartScreen on, to protect you from other apps.

SMART APP CONTROL

"Smart App Control" blocked the app

Smart App Control is a protection feature of Windows 11. Before they start, it blocks apps that Microsoft cannot confirm as safe and apps that are not signed with a trusted certificate. Unlike SmartScreen, it does not let you choose "Run" on the spot. Microsoft's help also says there is currently no way to allow just one specific app.

Before you turn it offTurning off Smart App Control weakens your PC's protection. Do this at your own discretion, and only after confirming in "Check before you run it" above that the file is the official one. On a work or school PC, you may need your administrator's permission.
  1. Open Settings

Open Settings from the Start menu.

  2. Open Privacy & security, then Windows Security

Click Privacy & security, then click Windows Security.

  3. Open App & browser control

    Click App & browser control.

  4. Click Smart App Control settings

Under Smart App Control, click Smart App Control settings.

  5. Choose Off

Choose Off from the three options: On, Evaluation and Off. If a confirmation appears, follow the on-screen instructions.

  6. Run the installer again

Run the LiveCapture4 installer. If a SmartScreen warning appears, continue with the SmartScreen steps above.

  7. After installing, turn it back On (recommended)

On the same screen, choose On.

If you cannot turn it back onOn PCs with the latest Windows Update, you can turn it back on without reinstalling Windows. On older versions of Windows, once it was turned off it could not be turned back on, and the PC had to be reset. Because it may not be possible under some conditions, we recommend bringing Windows Update up to date before you turn it off.
To see what was blockedIn Windows Security, open Virus & threat protection → Protection history to see the blocked apps.

FAQ

FAQ

Does a warning mean the file is dangerous?

Not necessarily. SmartScreen and Smart App Control also warn about or block apps that are not yet commonly downloaded, or whose signature cannot be confirmed as trusted. After you confirm in "Check before you run it" above that the file is the official one, follow the steps.

Should I turn SmartScreen itself off?

We do not recommend it. All you need is to run the installer once, which you can do with "More info" → "Run anyway".

I cannot find the Smart App Control setting

Smart App Control is a Windows 11 feature. Windows 10 does not have it, so if you do not see this item, follow the SmartScreen steps. The wording of settings can differ slightly depending on your Windows version.

I cannot turn it off on a work or school PC

If an administrator manages the PC's settings, you may not be able to change them. Please ask your administrator. For business use at a company or organization, see the notice on the download page.
